What kind of care does a dental crown need?

Dental crowns are designed and built to be as durable and functional as the teeth they replace. However, Dr. James Lin can help you use common sense and establish good oral hygiene practices to avoid damaging them. With proper care, your dental crown may last ten years or longer.

The team at James Lin, DMD, offers multiple material combinations for your dental crown. But no matter your crown's construction, good oral hygiene practices help crowns as much as your nearby natural teeth. We recommend that you:

  • Brush teeth twice a day with non-abrasive toothpaste–avoid whitening pastes that may dull your crowns.
  • Floss teeth at least once a day, preferably before bed.
  • Rinse your mouth with water or a dental rinse, especially after consuming acidic foods and beverages, soda most notably.
  • Maintain your regular dental cleanings so Dr. Lin can monitor your crown for any potential problems.

Other things which endanger a dental crown are biting down hard on foods like nuts or hard candy. In addition, chewing ice can harm your crown, and excessively sticky foods like caramel may dislodge your crown. If you break a broken crown, it may be costly to replace, causing problems with the remaining tooth structure it was meant to protect.

Porcelain crowns are an attractive and effective dental restoration, and when supported by metal or zirconia, they may become even stronger and more luminescent. The team at James Lin, DMD, can help you make the best choice.
