What are dental implants and how are they different from crowns and bridges?

Dental implants are among the newest forms of tooth replacements but are highly advanced when compared to related oral appliances like dental bridges or dentures. First, a dental implant is surgically placed in your jawbone, and because it's made from titanium, your bone grows around the implant to make it extraordinarily stable.

Dental implants are also versatile. For example, a single implant can replace any tooth, or multiple implants may be augmented to secure more extensive restorations, such as an implant-retained denture.

How Are Dental Bridges and Dental Implants Different?

A dental bridge also fills the space left by a missing tooth but has certain limitations. In most cases, we place a bridge secured to adjoining teeth by two dental crowns with the replacement tooth, or pontic, in between. A dental bridge relies on the stability of the adjoining teeth instead of being secured itself.

Conventional dentures also rely on surfaces in your mouth for a secure hold. Whether attached by suction or denture adhesives, this type of tooth replacement is especially unstable. Conventional dentures tend to slip, making it harder to chew and causing abrasive sores on your gums.
